Our Attitude Towards Sin

“Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.” (Exekiel 8:17)

In this chapter we find that Ezekiel has a vision while sitting with the elders of Judah in his house. In his vision the Lord takes him up by the lock of his head and takes him to the Temple and shows him the abominations that the house of Judah was doing in secret as they followed in the ways of the house of Israel. Having seen these abominations the Lord then asks Ezekiel a question, “Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here?” The house of Judah was doing things that literally made God sick, but it was a light thing unto them. 

Abominations are sins that God hates so much that it literally makes Him sick. We often think of abominations as being “big” sins that we would never commit, we find in Scripture that even sins commonly committed by believers are also considered abominations.

• Cross-dressing is an abomination to God. (Deuteronomy 22:5)

• A false balance is an abomination to God. (Proverbs 11:1)

• A rebel’s heart is an abomination to God. (Proverbs 11:20)

• Lying lips are an abomination to God (Proverbs 12:22)

• The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to God (Proverbs 15:8)

• The way of the wicked is an abomination to God (Proverbs 15:9)

• The thoughts of the wicked is an abomination to God (Proverbs 15:26)

• The proud in heart is an abomination to God. (Proverbs 16:5)

Sadly, we need to ask ourselves the same question that God asked Ezekiel about the house of Judah. Is it a light thing that we have committed sins and abominations before the Lord our God? We have been saved from the wages of our sin, and we will not suffer the wrath of God in the fires of Hell, but this does not give us a license to live in sin before our Heavenly Father. 

I fear that we are too disrespectful to our God. We tread hard on His long suffering believing that we can fulfill the lust of our flesh and then simply seek His forgiveness afterwards. In this way we believe we can live with the pleasure of our sin and somehow still be right with God. Let us never forget what the Scriptures tell us, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7) We must never let it become a light thing to sin before our God!
